Let's get started with some of the facts about Isha Upanishad. Isha or Ishavasyam Upanishad is one of the Mukhya / Principal Upanishads. The name of this Upanishad derived from the first word of the first verse of this Upanishad. Also known as Samhitopanishad, since it is the only Upanishad found as an integral part of a Samhita, namely the Vajasaneyisamhita. This Samhita can be found in Shukla Yajurveda. This is a compact Upanishad with 18 profound verses that remove ignorance about the Self and assert God is in everything or oneness of all existence. Will read out a mantra before proceeding to the1st verse.

“Om. Purnamadah Purnamidam Purnat Purnamudachyate ।

Purnasya Purnamadaya Purnameva Vashishyate ॥

Om shanti shanti shanti ॥”

Translation in English

Om. Brahman is complete. This (Brahman) is also complete because this is manifestation of Brahman. Brahman remains complete though this came out from Brahman. Knowing this truth and realizing the completeness of this, this becomes complete.

Om. Peace, peace, peace.

This is most prominent mantra which create the foundation of Vedantic philosophy. If one understands this mantra alone, old belief about God, I, the creation etc. will be destroyed and the whole universe will be understood in new dimension. This is more like eye opener.

Q. Who is Brahman here?

A. Brahman is a Vedantic term. It is different from Brahmin which you may heard of. Bhagavan / Ishwar / Parameshwara / Paramatma / the Absolute truth / Pure consciousness / the abstract reality / ultimate reality / the cause of all existence / the creator of the universe according to Hinduism this is Brahman. Vishnu / Krishna as per Vaishnavism. Shaivas call him Shiva. Omkara or Rabba according to Shikhs. God or almighty according to Christianity and Allah or Khuda according to Islam. Shunya (Nothing) according to Buddhism. Nothing according to Atheist. Whatever you believe in, or you do not believe in that supreme reality, or the root cause of whole creation is Brahman. No one knows how and when it began. No one knows how and when it will end. No one knows how it looks like is there any form or Brahman is formless. No one knows where the starting point is and where is the finishing point. Because of this nature he is infinity, limitless, formless, endless, beginning less, beyond imagination. Brahman cannot be captured with any sense organ or intellect or thought or any super intelligent machine or computer. Brahman cannot be experienced and for a sake of argument if experienced by chance then there is no language which can describe Brahman.

Q. Who is this here?

A. The Brahman in a form. The consciousness with characters. The Atman (The self). This is not only me but you, all the human beings, Animals, Birds, Fishes, Plants and Trees, Insects, Microorganisms. In nutshell all the living entities in this universe. Whoever living in any form is the consciousness. It can be single cell or something else which has not discovered yet. This is the willingness which present in every cell of your body or any one’s body or in the universe; that willingness knowingly or unknowingly is motivating living beings to live, create next generation, innovate, or discover new things, think impossible, imagine new horizons, make a better version of self every day. At least these living beings are trying to survive. At least they know they must survive according to nature’s law. But maximum of them are sleeping. They do not have any idea or do not want to know or do not have that intellect to realize this reality. Even most intelligent species on this earth took millions of years before understanding this truth. But you will find maximum of modern people are still in deep sleep. Very few people are awakened whom we say enlightened or liberated or Yogi like Rishis, Buddha, Adi Shankaracharya, Shri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, Guru Nanak, Jesus Christ, and many more great souls. Some of them are partially awaken like those who is eager to know or who is trying to understand this puzzle. The form was born one day and die one day but the formless the consciousness will never. That does not mean someone is residing inside you. This is the abstract consciousness or willingness which is present in every living being. That cannot be separated or treated as separated or identified separately.

Now let us understand the Mantra again. Brahman is complete because it does not need anyone's support or help to create this universe. That Brahman is manifesting as different forms, different living beings. The willingness or that consciousness presents everywhere and in every manifestation. We are just part of that universal consciousness. Because of that we are also the consciousness or Brahman and we are also complete. The Brahman is infinite because of it is limitless, endless and begining less nature. Because of ignorance, our limited senses and limited understanding we could not understand this truth. Once this ultimate knowledge is revealed to us and we started experiencing the oneness, our knowledge becomes complete, and that realization remains with us forever. Let us pray for peace everywhere, every mind in this universe.
