Introduction to Vedanta

So, without any further delay, lets read the Shloka.

असुर्या नाम ते लोका अन्धेन तमसावृताः

तांस्ते प्रेत्याभिगच्छन्ति ये के चात्महनो जनाः

In English:

asuryā nāma te lokā andhena tamasāvṛtāḥ |

tāṁste pretyābhigacchanti ye ke cātmahano janāḥ ||”

In English Translation:

Ignorance is like a place where there is no Sun, and the place is so dark that it is same as the visibility of a blind person. Ordinary people kill the Self – the Atman by not knowing the Self and enters in that dark place.

Knowledge is always compared with light. It removes darkness from our mind and intellect. The knowledge about Self or Brahman or God is the supreme knowledge. That is why it’s compared to the Sun and the Ignorance is darkness without single pinhole of light.

Ignorance

Knowledge removes darkness

Knowledge about Self vs Ignorance

Here killing is not about suicide or killing yourself. It is about ignoring yourself and your true nature. The animals, plants, birds etc. are not born with intellect and mind like humans. They are not as lucky as human beings or any super intelligent species which we have not discovered yet. I am not talking about an extremely dumb person whose intellect level would not be where he or she can think of or imagine. But maximum people have intelligence to know self but unfortunately, they do not want to know it. They just think human life is about eating, drinking, sleeping, working, mating and enjoying. That is how we are killing the Self.

Ignorance is similar to suicide

Life of Ignorant person

If you do word to word meaning it will be like after suicide, you will go to hell. My friend I believe you understood by now, here what does killing the Self means and that state of mind with complete darkness and ignorance is the hell. There is no real hell or heaven. After death no one goes anywhere. There is nothing called after death. After death means, your physical body will start getting decomposed. This verse is completely talking about an alive ignorant person and maximum people on this earth are like that only. So, wake up now. Upanishad is that Sun which can remove all inertia, darkness, prejudices, and ignorance.

Ignorance is like hell after suicide

Upanishad is that Sun which can remove all darkness / ignorance
