Introduction to Vedanta

So, without any further delay, lets read the Shloka.

अनेजदेकं मनसो जवीयो नैनद्देवा आप्नुवन् पूर्वमर्षत्‌।

तद्धावतोऽन्यानत्येति तिष्ठत् तस्मिन्नपो मातरिश्वा दधाति

In English:

anejadekaṁ manaso javīyo nainaddevā āpnuvan pūrvamarṣat |

taddhāvato'nyānatyeti tiṣṭhat tasminnapo mātariśvā dadhāti ||

Translation in English:

It is an unmoving one but faster than the mind. Even Gods could not overtake it because it runs ahead of everything. Being static, it overtakes all the runners. Being omnipresent, it controls the controller of life i.e., air and water

Let me tell you a story. There were 6 friends in an Ocean. Among them, the leader was a Shellfish. Its name was Mann (Mind). Mann observed there is a boundary line where the sky meets the ocean. He used to think Ocean was his rival. Ocean's name was Chetan (Consciousness). Mann used to think if he crosses that line, Chetan will never be able to catch him because Chetan can't enter the sky. He will fly like a free bird and will make new bird friends over there in the sky. He told his friends about this idea. His friends loved the idea. Among his friends, there was a beautiful flying fish named Drishti (Sight), a Black Marlin named Shraban (Hear), a Dolphin named Gandh (Smell), an octopus named Swaad (Taste) and a turtle named Sparsh (Touch). They decided to get into a race to make it more fun and to challenge Chetan as well. They also decided that who will stand last to enter the sky, will throw a party to others. In the very next day, all the friends met, and the grand race got started. Mann was so fast that others could not see him once the race started. He was so happy to know that Chetan didn't even start when he crossed 10 miles. Drishti was behind Mann. Shraban was following Drishti. Swaad and Sparsh were coming slowly at the end. But Chetan didn't even bother to start. He was busy playing with waves. All were happy that Chetan will have to throw the party to all. But whenever Mann comes out of water, he finds the boundary line as is. It never changed. He swam as fast as he could to reach the line, but he couldn't succeed, couldn't touch the boundary line at all. After multiple attempts, he finally got tired of trying and started waiting for his friends. One by one all the friends came over there. Everyone was tired too. Mann understood that it's impossible to reach that line and enter the sky. He may be faster than his friends but always be behind Chetan . He surrendered to Chetan . Then Chetan removed ignorance of Mann. Chetan told Mann he is everywhere in the ocean. There is no boundary line in him. You and your friends manifested from me and will die in me only. I was here before your born and will be there after your death. I am the one controlling everything in this ocean. I am your Home, I am your playground, I am your food arranger, I am your mother, I am your friend. By saying that Chetan happily hugged all of them and threw a party to Mann and his friends. Mann’s ego was completely destroyed, and he met his true self.

Alike Chetan Aatman is the one which is not moving anywhere but it is the fastest of all. Even faster than anything which we think fastest in this world. What is fastest in this world? Answer is light. What is faster than light? Think. Yes, that is thought or imagination or in one word mind which is master of both thought and imagination. The verse is talking about something which is faster than that as well but not moving. In one sense thought also does not move but is faster than all physical things. Same quality. Is not it? The Aatman is one and spread everywhere beyond our imagination. So, it was there before you started thinking and even before your body and mind got an identity.

In Vedas Gods are natural powers like Fire, Water, Air, Sun etc. All these natural powers exist in this ocean of consciousness, this consciousness was even there when these powers were not present. As the previous Shloka was saying knowledge is knowing the Self. In that point of view, we can know ourselves by our knowledge organs. Here, we can assume senses as Gods. Senses are way too fast as one can imagine. Someone touches you, immediately the brain gets the signal. But those senses are not as fast as your mind, then how can it be faster than consciousness? It would not be wrong to say the Aatman cannot be known through senses. Because of that you will notice spiritual practices talk about controlling senses and channelize all the energy, which is flowing outside through sense organs, towards inner side. Yoga and Meditation help us in that. Then using your mind power, you can travel the world of Aatman. Unfortunately, the mind also can’t reach there as it is faster than the mind. So, the last step is stopping the mind, becoming thoughtless and be the Self. When someone gets to that state then the person is in Samadhi. Then there is no difference between Aatman and Brahman. If you relate the story Drishti, Shraban, Gandh, Swaad and Sparsh were always behind Mann and Mann could not overtake Chetan though it was faster than others. Finally, Mann surrendered to Chetan . When he surrendered Chetan removed his ignorance.

Because Brahman is omnipresent, so it is static and being static it overtakes all the runners whether it is physical powers like light or natural powers like senses or subtle power like mind. You can relate the story here. Chetan is Brahman and Mann is Mind. Mann can see the boundary line of ocean but could not reach there because the water of Chetan is everywhere. Without even starting the race, Chetan won the race

Last line is being static the Brahman is controlling everything. For life we need air. That is why it is a master of life. We need water because 60% of our body is made of water. Without water we can’t live for more than 3 days and without air we can’t live for more than 4 minutes. All species are dependent on these two natural powers. Even life started in water only through a single cell. Different gases present in the air were responsible for becoming water and then single cell organisms came into existence using air and water and later millions of species were born through evolution. All these things became possible because of that universal consciousness or Brahman. That Brahman is everywhere, in every life, in every cell. For individual that is the Self or Aatman. Although everything is happening through different types of physical phenomenon, nothing was or is possible without the Consciousness.

In conclusion, Aatman is unmoving, one and spread everywhere. You cannot know your true Self or Aatman through senses or mind. Mind can help you in your journey to know the Self to a certain extent. After that you must surrender and have to be the Self to know the Self. That Self is the Consciousness or Brahman. Doing nothing actually is doing everything. Because it ignited the Universe, and everything started happening as a physical phenomenon whether that is the Big Bang or evolution. This Sholka also demolishes the claims of people who claim of seeing God or hearing God's voice or relate any sound with God or sensing a sweet smell in deep meditation and relate that with God or received touch from God. Such a type of experience is merely an illusion or an experience of hallucination or a state of mind where imagination surpasses reality or like a dream.
