Introduction to Vedanta

So, without any further delay, lets read the Shloka.

तदेजति तन्नैजति तद्दूरे तद्वन्तिके
तदन्तरस्य सर्वस्य तदु सर्वस्यास्य बाह्यतः

In English:

tadejati tannaijati taddūre tadvantike |
tadantarasya sarvasya tadu sarvasyāsya bāhyataḥ || ”

Translation in English:

That moves. That does not move. That is far. That is very nearby. That is inside of all and that is also outside of all this.

Let me tell you a short story. A fisher man named Rameshwar used to live near the Bay of Bengal. His teenage son Shiva was very curious about the sea. His father told him many stories about fishing. One day he got an opportunity to accompany his father for the first time. He used to think that he would find bigger waves in the deep sea. He told his friend Basudeva to come with him. Basudeva did not accept the offer because he thought he would be tired of boating that far. After boating for an hour or so they are in the middle of the sea. He thought it was too far but surprisingly it’s not that far from the coast what he thought of. He noticed the great silence over there. It feels like the sea is motionless compared to noisy vibrant waves on the seashore. The waves are made of the same water from this deep sea but while reaching the seashore they are getting different forms and moving at different speeds to crash on the coast. This small adventure taught Shiva the highest spiritual knowledge.

This Shloka is in continuation to Shloka 3 and Shloka 4. Here, the that means the Aatman or the Self. That does not move means it does not perform any action by itself. That is Nirakara Nirguna or formless attribute less pure consciousness. When that Nirguna Brahman manifested as life it is Saguna Sakara or Brahman with form and certain attributes or Aatman or the Self. Like in the story same water in the deep sea is motion less and calm whereas near seashore it is forming different shaped waves

When Shiva was ignorant about the deep sea, he used to think it was too far but when he went there, he was taken aback. He found it was not as far as he imagined. Same way ignorant persons think, it will take millions of births to be enlightened and experience God. For them, it appears to be next to impossible same as Basudeva in the story. He missed the opportunity by thinking it was too far and he did not want to take the pain of boating. Maximum people are like Basudeva. They prefer to be ignorant rather than putting some effort into knowing the truth.

In other sense, the sea near the bank can be seen from the beach but the deep sea is far from eyesight. But both contain the same water. Same way every living being near to you, are manifested from the same Brahman and even any one farthest from you also manifested from the same Brahman. Brahman is spread everywhere.

The last line is saying that Brahman is inside of all, including you and outside of everything. Same as differently formed waves made of same sea water from inside to outside. If we see the physical aspect of our body or anything which we can see in this world. We will find the same subatomic particles and space. Electrons are rotating around the nucleus. In the cosmic world also, everything is rotating some bigger cosmic body in space. Everything in this world is made of the same subatomic particles and originated from a single source of condensed energy. In other words, everything which we can see, feel including us is energy only. Energy is getting transferred from one form to another. Beyond that there is the consciousness which we are enjoying as living beings. Combining energy and consciousness it’s manifestation of Brahman as Aatman. We can think both as one unit; for living being it is manifested and for non-living being it is unmanifested. Hence, whatever is inside you, that same is inside everyone and everything.

Final take aways Brahman is everywhere. It is Nirakara and Nirguna (formless and attribute less) as well as Sakara and Saguna (With form and attributes). It is manifested in every living being. Make some effort to know it. You can know the truth in this life only. You don’t need multiple births to know this. If one can understand this Shloka, it removes the ignorance. People will not fight in the name of God. What for you will fight? The God someone is worshipping is as truth as yours. When it is near you in everything then treat everyone, every life and nature with utmost care. You don’t need to go too far or any specific place to find out the truth.
