Isha Upanishad | Shloka 06 | English | Hate Story 3 | Why so much hatred? | yastu sarvāṇi | Vedanta Philosophy
In English:
“yastu sarvāṇi bhūtānyātmanyevānupaśyati |
sarvabhūteṣu cātmānaṃ tato na vijugupsate ||”
Translation in English:
The being who sees everything in the Self and the Self in everything, feels no hatred for anyone.
Let me narrate a story of Righty, Lefty and Leggy brothers. Righty is the name of the right hand; Lefty is name of the left hand and Leggy brothers are legs. One day Lefty accidentally touched Righty. Righty pushed Lefty immediately and started abusing him. “You Idiot; low class idolator, you are born for cleaning poop. How dare you touch me? Oh! God, I have to again purify myself.” After this incident he pinned a notice to the wall for Lefty and Leggy brothers that they can’t enter in his area because they either belong to a lower caste or worship different God. After a few days Righty had an accident. He was seriously injured and was bleeding incessantly. Lefty immediately held down the cut area to stop the bleeding though Righty was saying not to touch him. Then the Leggy brothers ran to the nearest hospital to get emergency treatment. Righty needed to undergo plastic surgery. The Leggy brothers donated their skin to him without giving a second thought. After a few days Righty recovered because Lefty took all the responsibilities of Righty, so that Righty could take full rest. Righty understood his mistake and removed the notice. He understood they all are made of the same flesh and skin. They are part of one body. The same body is in each of them. They worship their master, which is body, in different ways. No one is small here. No one is special even. Everyone is performing a job based on their skill. If one stops performing his duty the whole body will suffer. Eventually he will suffer. After this realization all hatred got vanished, and everyone started respecting each other and living peacefully thereafter.
In the last Shloka what we concluded is stated here. The Self or the Aatman is everywhere and in everything and in every being. It is pervaded everywhere. For living organisms, it is manifested and for non-living, it is unmanifested. We are just part of that Self or Aatman. Same as the story. Imagine yourself as one organ or part of the body which is Aatman. In other words, think yourself as the Aatman and everyone, everything in that. Same as what was realized by Righty in the story.
After this realization who will you hate? You need another object or subject to hate. There is only one. Single existence and that is the Aatman. You don’t have anyone to hate.
In today’s world two brothers in a family fight for their own interest, two families also fight for their own false honor in the society, rich people think they have right to deprive poor, people created castes and classes in society and one group hates another group, people created religion to fight over God, one race or ethnicity thinks they are superior, the followers of one ideology can’t tolerate followers of other ideologies, nations are fighting with each other, human beings think they are the most intelligent species and they can kill or torture any animal, birds, fishes according their wish, human started thinking they are the God and they can mold the nature according to their need. The list of hatred is long. Root cause is same. We all think we are different from each other. Our ego says we are superior to others. Everyone is thinking for themselves, for their own interest. In macro level a group of people or a caste or a class or a race or an ethnic group or a nation or human species is thinking for themselves only. Solution is simple. Remove your ignorance and come out from that bodily individualistic thought and find yourself in everyone and everything. Once you realize that, automatically you will love and care for everything, every human being, every species and nature. I hope this shloka will change your outlook towards life.
