Dear readers

Welcome back to our blog. Today we will discuss fifteenth shloka of Isha Upanishad.

You can recite the shloka with me.

हिरण्मयेन पात्रेण सत्यस्यापिहितं मुखम्‌।
तत् त्वं पूषन्नपावृणु सत्यधर्माय दृष्टये

“hiraṇmayena pātreṇa satyasyāpihitaṁ mukham |

tat tvaṁ pūṣannapāvṛṇu satyadharmāya dṛṣṭaye ||”

Translation in English:

The face of Truth is covered by a golden lid. Do thou, O Sun remove it, so as to be seen by me what is my true nature.

Prince Siddharth was always surrounded by servants, a beautiful wife, a lovely son in his palace with all sorts of comfort. He was shielded from any kind of sufferings, sorrow, pain, death etc. He was always kept away from old men, Ascetics and spiritual knowledge. He never stepped out of the palace. When he stepped out for the first time in his life, he encountered truth of life in the form of an old man, a diseased man, a dead body and he left everything to find out the reason for human suffering. Later he became a liberated soul whom the whole world knows as Buddha.

Before we understand this Shloka, we recommend you to watch previous Shlokas to understand worshipping manifested and unmanifested and of course  other shlokas if you missed them. Links to those blogs are given at the bottom of this page.

The shloka is based on a Vedic sacrifice. I am not interested in that, instead let me explain to you the inner meaning. Three ways we can think of the golden cover. First, the Golden vessel is covered like our skull is similar to vessel and covers the brain which has the mind and intelligence to know the truth. Hence, it is believed that the Brahman Dwar (Door to Brahman) / Brahman Randhra (Opening to Brahman) is present at the top of head.  Second, the Sun itself is like a golden vessel and the truth is covered in the Sun by the Sun. Third, the Aatman is covered by body. This body and its desires for money, jewelry, property, tasty food, sex, comfort etc. are maya or ignorance. The Golden lid is ignorance, and it covers knowledge. As the Sun removes darkness of the Earth, so, the sage is praying to the Sun - remove that cover of ignorance and show me my true nature. Let my mind figure out the truth. The same truth is hidden by this body and the same truth hidden in the Sun. That hidden truth is Brahman. Like prince Siddharth, we need to remove our ignorance to find out the truth.

In our modern time, we are living the most comfortable life in human history. We are surrounded by all sorts of comforts and gadgets. All information is available at our fingertips. But maximum fingers are searching for either pornography or sexual content. Low-cost high-speed internet opened the dark secret of human beings or the real nature of humans. With that, social crime like rape and virtual crime like leaking private videos on social media are increasing day by day. Private photos, private romantic moments, deep fake nude AI photos and videos are published by morons and the educated civilized people enjoying those and sharing with others. The Internet has exposed the demonic side of human beings. Is that our true nature?

If we look backward, we will find our true nature same as a chimpanzee or an Ape or other animals. They are driven by the body. Whether it is hunger or sex everything is driven by body and survival of the body and survival of the species. They are following their nature or Dharma. But the problem is with human beings; we want to do the same thing but because we have become social animals and living in a legal framework, we can’t figure out how to handle our biological needs. That gap is fulfilled by corporates, media houses, entertainment industries and social media influencers through sexual and pornographic content. Even some of the religions sell sex in their holy books in the name of God. A society where sex is taboo and people are shy away in talking about sex education, there maximum people are consuming this type of content. This is more dangerous when A society where maximum people are not well educated and deprived of a good lifestyle and of course deprived of sex where only entertainment for them is sex. How can we expect a nation to produce a talented workforce when maximum brains are becoming dull by this way?  Modern education somehow is lacking in building character. It has no doubt progressed in science and technology but still behind in perspective to real issues with our identity. I think this specific verse and all Upanishads are trying to say again and again and in different ways that our true nature is divine. When we recognize it, our education becomes complete. We start living our life with all the moral values. We know when to eat, how to eat and what to eat and the same way we know when to do sex and why to do sex. We will not become servants of sex or an addict of pornography or a robot of corporates. When that will happen believe me there will be millions of Buddha everywhere and let’s pray to the Sun for that day. O Sun, kindly remove the Golden Lid, so that I can see my true nature.
